Last October I found myself serving as foreman of a jury on a criminal sexual abuse trial.  The defendant was accused of 16 different charges involving boys from the ages of 7 -16.  Several of the victims had learning and/or developmental disabilities.  Most of the victims had gotten to know the defendant through his volunteer service at church.

As jury members we listened to almost a week of testimony by victim family members, police, social services experts, church leaders and the victims.  It was heartbreaking and life changing.  We convicted the defendant on most of the charges.  He will not be able to harm other children….but the damage and pain had already been done.

Research on the topic of sexual abuse indicates that more than 1 in 4 girls under the age of 18 and about 1 in 6 boys of the same age have been sexually abused.  Over 90% of sex offenders describe themselves as religious and most offenders have committed multiple offenses over a lengthy period of time.  It is estimated that only 5% of sexual abuse is reported to authorities and only 3% of offenders ever get caught.
